Match Report
On a chilly evening at Kelman St, Caloundra United produced one of their most encouraging performances of the season, going toe-to-toe with the best side in the league before ultimately falling 2-4 to Stella Swans. Shorthanded and tested, the squad demonstrated the kind of collective resilience that signals a team very much capable of competing at this level.
Top-of-the-Table Encounter Delivers Plenty of Promise Despite Final Scoreline
A Breathless Opening Half
The opening period was nothing short of extraordinary. Caloundra drew first blood in the 2nd minute when Jared finished clinically, with Aaron providing the assist — a combination that would prove decisive all night. Stella Swans levelled through a 9th-minute spot kick, but Caloundra refused to be rattled. Jared struck again on the 10th minute — again assisted by Aaron — with the Swans equalizing again to restore parity and send the sides into the break level at 2-2.
Level at half-time against the best team in the league — this was a statement of intent from Caloundra United.
Second Half Fatigue Proves Costly
Down on troops and carrying the physical toll of a hard-fought first half, Caloundra’s legs began to tire in the second period. Stella Swans capitalised with goals in the 54th and 75th minutes to seal the victory. It was a case of squad depth making the difference at the top level — a challenge Caloundra are acutely aware of and well-positioned to address.

Standout Performers
- Jack — Man of the Match. Commanding and composed throughout, Jack set the standard at the back in a performance of real authority.
- Jezz — Immense again at the back. Continues to show his worth since his big money move in the Summer (the cheque’s in the email pal).
- Jared — Two goals against the league’s best side. His movement and finishing were exceptional.
- Aaron — Two assists to match Jared’s brace. A creative and tenacious presence who continues to deliver when it matters most.
Injury & Availability Update
The squad continues to manage some key absences in Christian, Mark Brackley, and OG club legend Keith. The preferred #1 Stevie was a huge miss, resulting in Dan’s first reintroduction post ACL injury to stand between the sticks — safe to say the team look forward to Stevie’s prompt return to shore up things on the goal line. Paul tweaked his hamstring and will require a period of rest, while Ben — who had to be firmly talked out of returning too early — needs at least another week to recover from his internal injuries sustained back in round 4. Their patience will be rewarded.
Looking Ahead: The Top-Four Race Is On
This result, while disappointing on the scoreboard, is enormously positive in context. Caloundra United matched the division’s best side for an entire half of football, showed real grit as a collective unit, and have now firmly established the standard required to compete at the summit of this league. With greater squad depth available in the coming weeks, the belief is clear — we can beat these guys. The top-four battle is well and truly on and there’s real feeling in the group that Caloundra could go all the way. The target now — finals football. We roll onto the next…
